Can I pay for the Dubai Metro with a bank card or my phone?

ArrivalsPublished Updated
Answer

Not with a bank card, Apple Pay or Google Pay: RTA puts them in the last phase of its nol upgrade, due by the end of Q1 2027. Your phone can carry a ticket: RTA's nol Pay app issues the Red Ticket as a QR code, at the paper ticket's fares plus a fee per purchase.

No. A Metro gate in Dubai does not take a contactless bank card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. RTA has put bank cards and digital wallets in the third and final phase of its nol payment upgrade, and says every phase is due by the end of the first quarter of 2027. Until then a fare is paid with nol: a plastic card, a paper Red Ticket, or, new this autumn, a Red Ticket held as a QR code on your phone.

Your bank card is still useful, one step earlier. The ticket machines and ticket offices at Metro stations take cash or a credit or debit card for a nol card.

The QR code is the Red Ticket on your phone

RTAโ€™s nol Pay app added QR travel in its 29 September 2026 update, and RTAโ€™s own note on that update reads โ€œYour Red Ticket is now QRโ€. You get the code in the app and scan it at the gate. It works on the Metro, Tram and bus. RTAโ€™s nol service page now lists a QR Ticket, and a Combined QR Ticket with Etihad Rail, next to the paper Red Ticket and the plastic cards.

The paper Red Ticketโ€™s rules are the ones RTA publishes: it lasts 90 days, with up to 10 trips or 5 day passes loaded, and it is accepted on the bus, Metro and Tram only. Not on the water bus, the ferry or the abras.

What a QR ticket costs

RTAโ€™s QR Ticket page lists the fares. A single trip costs the same as on a paper Red Ticket, and every purchase adds a service fee of AED 2.

QR ticket, Regular classFareFee per purchase
Single trip, 1 zoneAED 4AED 2
Single trip, 2 adjacent zonesAED 6AED 2
Single trip, all zonesAED 8.5AED 2
1-Day Pass, all zonesAED 20AED 2

Gold class, for the Gold Class cabin, costs double on every line.

RTA charges the fee per transaction, not per ticket, and the app asks how many tickets you want before you pay. So buy the dayโ€™s trips together. Four one-zone trips bought in one go cost AED 18, the same as a paper Red Ticket loaded with four trips. Bought one at a time, the same four trips cost AED 24.

Bought together, the QR ticket and the paper Red Ticket come out level, so the comparison with a Silver card does not move. Silver charges AED 3 for the same one-zone trip, and from the fifth trip it is the cheaper way to ride. Which nol card to buy has the break-even.

On long trips the day pass pays off fast. Three all-zones trips bought as single tickets cost AED 27.50; the 1-Day Pass costs AED 22 with its fee.

A QR ticket in the app lasts 90 days if unused, and until the end of the day once used. A paper QR ticket from a station machine expires at 11:59pm on the day you buy it. Buying in the app needs a data connection, and so does showing the code at the gate: RTA says the code is stored in the app and refreshes itself.

The virtual nol card is a different thing

nol Pay can also hold a full nol card, not a single ticket. RTA limits that to selected Samsung and Huawei phones, and the Huawei Watch 3 and 3 Pro, so an iPhone cannot hold one, and RTAโ€™s steps for buying one begin with a UAE Pass login. RTAโ€™s page does not say whether a visitor can get one, so we do not either. The QR code has no such limit in RTAโ€™s update: it came to nol Pay on the App Store as well as on Android.

Where a bank card does work on RTA transport

The abras on Dubai Creek take credit and debit cards, except on the CR1 and CR2 Creek crossings. What an abra ride costs has the fares.

When bank cards come to the Metro

RTA has split the nol upgrade into three phases. The first launches QR ticketing, the second brings a new generation of nol cards, and the third adds bank cards and digital wallets. On 5 July 2026 RTA said the project was 72% complete and due by the end of the first quarter of 2027.

That date has already moved once. In March 2025 RTA gave the end of Q3 2026 for the same three phases. We read the schedule as a plan, not a launch date, and this page changes when RTA announces that the gates take bank cards, not before.

Where this comes from

The schedule is from RTAโ€™s announcements through the Dubai Media Office. The QR note is from RTAโ€™s nol Pay app listing, published by RTA, the QR fares and fee are from RTAโ€™s QR Ticket service page, and the card, Red Ticket and virtual card rules are from RTAโ€™s Manage nol Card service page, last updated by RTA on 29 September 2026. Whichever way you pay, the Metroโ€™s fines are the same, and riding without a valid fare is one of them.
