Can tourists use hourly car rental in Dubai?

Dubai has a per-minute and per-hour car rental service licensed by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA): you find a car in an app, unlock it with your phone, drive, and leave it. RTA names two operators, Udrive and Yaldi, and its service page has a separate column for visitors. So the service is not residents-only.

For a visitor, RTA lists: Passport, entry visa and driving licence. The licence is the condition that decides it, and RTA words it this way: All individuals with a valid driving licence accepted in the UAE for the same class of vehicle.

The licence is the real test

The passport and the entry visa you will have anyway. The licence is where visitors differ, and RTA does not repeat its licence rules on this page — it points to “a licence accepted in the UAE”. Which licences that covers, and when an International Driving Licence is needed instead, is set out in can you drive in Dubai on your home licence. Check that first. If your licence does not qualify there, it does not qualify here.

What it costs

RTA does not publish one price. It sets a range, and each car is priced inside it.

The top of the range is 7 times the bottom. RTA does not say which vehicles sit where in that range, so the fare for a given car is something you see in the app, not something this page can tell you.

At the limits, a full 24 hours would cost between AED 720 and AED 5,040.

What the fare covers, and what it does not

Salik is the one extra to plan for. Each toll gate you pass adds its own charge, and the amount depends on the time of day — the current gate prices are in how much a Salik toll is.

The limits that decide whether it fits your trip

• 24 hours at most. RTA: you cannot rent a vehicle for longer. For a multi-day trip this is the wrong product.
• One driver. Only one person can book the vehicle and drive it. If two of you want to share the driving, it does not allow that.
• Dubai at both ends. Start and end the trip in Dubai; driving to other emirates is allowed. A day trip to Abu Dhabi works if you come back; a one-way drive does not.
• 400 vehicles in total. That is the whole fleet, both operators together.

What RTA’s page does not settle

RTA’s page lists the documents and the rules. It does not say how an operator handles a foreign licence at sign-up, what deposit or age limit it applies, or what its insurance excludes — RTA says insurance is “based on the insurance policy of each company”. Those are in each app’s terms, which RTA tells you to read after downloading the app and before registering.

For longer than a day, or with a second driver, a conventional rental is the product that fits.
