What gets added to a Dubai taxi fare on top of the meter?

The number on the meter is not the number you pay. Dubai’s transport authority publishes four separate additions, and a fifth rule that has no published number at all. Knowing which is which is the difference between a fare that looks wrong and a fare you can check.

The four you can predict

Road tolls work differently from the rest: they are added to the fare whenever the trip passes a Salik gate, and RTA does not publish a per-gate figure on that page. So a route that crosses Sheikh Zayed Road several times costs more than the same distance that does not, and you cannot work out how much in advance from this source. Salik’s own per-gate rates, and the VAT added to them since June 2026, are on how much a Salik toll costs.

The Sharjah surcharge is the one that surprises people most, because it is not distance-based. It applies to the crossing itself.

The airport is a different starting point

A taxi from the airport starts at AED 25, which is AED 13 more than the minimum fare for a taxi you hail in the city. That gap is not a surcharge added later — it is the fare the meter opens at, before any distance is counted.

The rule with no number

RTA states that fares are subject to change during peak hours and at event locations, and it names the windows:

Monday to Thursday 8am to 10am and 4pm to 8pm, Friday 8am to 10am and 4pm to midnight, Saturday and Sunday 4pm to midnight.

What it does not publish is the changed rate. That is worth saying plainly rather than filling in with a figure from somewhere else — any specific peak multiplier you find on a travel site did not come from RTA.

The practical read is narrower than it sounds. The windows tell you when a trip is likely to cost more and take longer, which is the same information you would use to decide whether to take the Metro instead. They do not let you calculate a fare.

Checking a fare you have already paid

If a fare looks high, the questions in order are:

• Did the trip cross into Sharjah? That is a flat addition, not a meter reading.
• How many Salik gates? Each one adds, and the route may not have been the one you expected.
• Was there waiting? At AED 0.5 a minute, fifteen minutes at a kerb is AED 7.50.
• Was it inside a rush-hour window? Then RTA itself says the fare may differ.

What this page does not tell you

It gives no per-kilometre rate and no night tariff. RTA’s taxi service page publishes minimum fares and surcharges but leaves the distance table empty, so we are not printing a rate we could not read there.

It also does not cover ride-hailing pricing. Uber, Careem and Bolt set their own fares and are not bound by the RTA table above.
