How do you get from DXB to the city — metro, taxi, or pickup?

Most comparisons of these three start with price, which is the least interesting part. The Metro wins on price by a wide margin and it is not close. What actually decides the question is whether the Metro is available to you at all when you land — and two published rules settle that before cost enters the picture.

The two rules that decide it

Your bags. The Metro allowance is two pieces, including hand luggage. If you are travelling with a third case, the Metro is out. Not expensive — out.

Your arrival time. The Metro does not run around the clock, and the schedule is not the same every day.

Sunday is the one to notice. The first train is 3 hours later than every other day of the week. A flight landing at 06:00 on a Sunday puts you in the arrivals hall two hours before the Metro opens — and that is exactly the slot a lot of European red-eyes land in.

What each one costs

The taxi starting fare at the airport is AED 25. The minimum fare for a taxi hailed on the road anywhere else in Dubai is AED 12, or AED 13 if you book it through an app. So the airport premium is AED 13 before the meter starts running on distance.

Against that, a Metro journey costs between AED 3 and AED 7.5 depending on how many fare zones you cross. Even at the top of that range, and even counting the AED 25 for the card itself, one taxi ride from the airport costs more than the card plus the journey.

Where you are staying matters more than which is cheaper

The Metro is a line, not a network. It gets you to a station, and then you are walking or taking a short taxi with your bags. If your hotel is on the Red Line — much of Sheikh Zayed Road, Downtown, Marina — the Metro is genuinely door-to-near-door. If it is not, you will end up paying for a taxi at the far end anyway, and the saving evaporates.

This is the part worth checking before you land rather than after.

Ride-hailing

Uber, Careem and Bolt all operate at DXB alongside the metered taxis, and the airport rank is staffed 24 hours. Prices move with demand in a way metered taxis do not, so there is no fixed figure we can publish for them — and we are not going to invent one.

The waiting charge on a metered taxi is AED 0.5 per minute, which is worth knowing if you are being picked up rather than picking up.

So, in practice

• Landing Sunday before 08:00? Taxi. The Metro is not running yet.
• Landing after midnight any day? Taxi. Last train is midnight, 01:00 on Friday.
• Three or more bags? Taxi. The two-bag rule is not negotiable at the gate.
• Two bags, daytime, staying near the Red Line? Metro, and buy the Silver card — see which nol card to buy.
• Arriving at Terminal 2? There is no Metro station there. Plan for a taxi or an inter-terminal move first.

What this page does not tell you

We do not quote a total taxi fare to any destination. Neither the RTA nor Dubai Airports publishes a per-kilometre rate, so a “roughly this much to Downtown” figure would have to be copied from somewhere we cannot verify. Most travel pages publish one anyway. We would rather give you the starting fare, which is published, and let the meter do the rest.

We do not publish journey times. They depend on traffic and on which station you are heading to, and a single number would be wrong most of the time.
