How do you get from DXB to the city — metro, taxi, or pickup?

Most comparisons of these three start with price, which is the least interesting part. The Metro wins on price by a wide margin and it is not close. What actually decides the question is whether the Metro is available to you at all when you land — and two published rules settle that before cost enters the picture.

The two rules that decide it

Your bags. The Metro allowance is two pieces, including hand luggage. If you are travelling with a third case, the Metro is out. Not expensive — out.

Your arrival time. The Metro does not run around the clock, and the schedule is not the same every day.

Sunday is the one to notice. The first train is 3 hours later than every other day of the week. A flight landing at 06:00 on a Sunday puts you in the arrivals hall two hours before the Metro opens — and that is exactly the slot a lot of European red-eyes land in.

Those are the hours the stations are open, not the last departure from the airport. The last train into the city leaves Terminal 3 at 22:56 from Monday to Thursday and at 23:56 on Friday. The last metro from the airport has every day and both terminals.

If either rule rules the Metro out, you are taking a taxi, and the rest of this page is about what that costs.

What each one costs

RTA’s fare table puts the taxi starting fare from Dubai’s airports at AED 20 for a car and AED 25 for a van, and Dubai Taxi, which runs the airport taxis, lists the same two figures on its own page. Dubai Airports’ taxi page gives one figure for every airport taxi, AED 25. We show both rather than pick one. A taxi hailed on the road in the city opens at AED 5 by day, so a car from the airport starts AED 15 higher before the meter counts any distance. The minimum fare for a short city trip is a separate figure: AED 12 on the road, AED 13 through an app.

Against that, a Metro journey costs between AED 3 and AED 7.5 depending on how many fare zones you cross. A new Silver card plus the longest journey comes to AED 32.50. A taxi is at its starting fare before it moves, and the distance charge comes on top.

Where you are staying matters more than which is cheaper

The Metro is a line, not a network. It gets you to a station, and then you are walking or taking a short taxi with your bags. If your hotel is on the Red Line — much of Sheikh Zayed Road, Downtown, Marina — the Metro is genuinely door-to-near-door. If it is not, you will end up paying for a taxi at the far end anyway, and the saving evaporates.

This is the part worth checking before you land rather than after.

Ride-hailing

Uber, Careem and Bolt all operate at DXB alongside the metered taxis, and the airport rank is staffed 24 hours. They are not one price category. RTA lists Careem (Hala Taxi), Bolt, Zed and Yango as apps for booking a regular taxi, and a taxi booked that way runs on the meter. Uber is on RTA’s separate list of luxury-vehicle apps, which RTA puts at least 30% above taxi fares without publishing a fare table — so there is no fixed figure for those rides, and we are not going to invent one. The waiting charge on a metered taxi is AED 0.5 per minute, which is worth knowing if you are being picked up rather than picking up.

The bus

Buses leave from Arrivals, Terminals 1, 2 and 3 — including Terminal 2, which has no Metro station. Payment is nol card only: cash is not taken on board, so buy the card in the terminal before you walk out to the stand. Dubai Airports does not publish route numbers or timetables for these buses and points to the RTA for them, so we do not list any either.

So, in practice

• Landing Sunday before 08:00? Taxi. The Metro is not running yet.
• Landing late in the evening? Check the last train first. From Terminal 3 it leaves at 22:56 from Monday to Thursday, not at midnight. After it, taxi.
• Three or more bags? Taxi. The two-bag rule is not negotiable at the gate.
• Two bags, daytime, staying near the Red Line? Metro, and buy the Silver card — see which nol card to buy.
• Arriving at Terminal 2? There is no Metro station there. Plan for a taxi, the bus from the Arrivals stand, or an inter-terminal move first.

What this page does not tell you

We do not quote a total taxi fare to any destination. The distance rate is published: Dubai Taxi charges AED 2.62 per kilometre for its airport taxi, and how much a taxi charges per kilometre works through what that comes to. What no official page publishes is the route distance to a given hotel, or how many Salik gates that route crosses, so a “this much to Downtown” figure would still be a guess.

We do not publish journey times. They depend on traffic and on which station you are heading to, and a single number would be wrong most of the time.
