Yes, within a limit stricter than it sounds: RTA allows one large and one small suitcase per passenger, each with a maximum size, stowed in the cabin's luggage area. The airport counts hand luggage inside the same limit, so two cases plus a backpack is where the sources part ways.

Most advice about the Metro from the airport stops at “it has a luggage limit”. The limit is published, it has measurements, and the two official sources describe it differently. That difference is what decides whether a family with a backpack each can ride it.

The rule RTA publishes

RTA runs the Metro, so its rule is the operative one.

The limit is per passenger, not per group. Two adults may carry two large and two small cases between them; one adult may not carry three because the other is travelling light.

Where the airport’s version differs

Dubai Airports describes the same Metro allowance as two pieces, including hand luggage. RTA’s page says two suitcases and does not mention hand luggage at all.

On a quiet train nobody will count a laptop bag. But if you are planning around the limit — two full cases and a backpack — you are relying on the gap between the two wordings. The stricter reading is the airport’s, and it is the one to plan on if a missed train would cost you.

Checking your case against the numbers

Airline cabin and checked-bag limits are set in different units and for a different purpose, so they do not tell you whether a case fits RTA’s size. Measure the case itself, including wheels and handles, against 81 × 58 × 30 cm. Check all three dimensions, not the longest one — the third figure is the depth, and it is the smallest of the three.

If one case is over, the Metro is not the right option on arrival, whatever it costs compared with a taxi. Neither source describes an exception for oversized bags.

Where the Metro actually starts

The Red Line serves Terminals 1 and 3. There is no Metro station at Terminal 2, so the luggage question does not come up there — the choice is between a taxi, a bus and a pre-booked transfer.

When a transfer is the better answer

If your luggage is over RTA’s limit, or on the line between the two wordings, the options that carry luggage without a published suitcase limit are a taxi — metered from AED 25 at the airport — or a transfer booked in advance at a fixed price. The second is worth it mainly for groups, where one vehicle replaces two taxis.

What this page does not tell you

It does not give a weight limit. RTA’s Metro page gives dimensions but no weight, and we are not adding one from elsewhere. It also does not cover prams, bicycles or e-scooters, which the same page does not address.
