What counts as oversized baggage at Dubai airport?

Most people check the weight and stop there, because weight is what the airline charges for. DXB applies two rules the airline does not, and both of them are about the shape of the bag rather than what is in it. Failing either one costs you a second queue you did not plan for.

The two tests

A bag is oversized at DXB if it is bigger than 90 cm long, 75 cm high and 60 cm wide. Exceed any one of the three and the size test fails — the dimensions are not a total. A bag over the size limit is also over the Metro’s suitcase limit; a porter’s flat-bed trolley is meant for it.

Separately, every checked bag must have at least one flat surface. This one catches items that are well within the size limit: a round case, a duffel packed soft, a wrapped bundle. The belt system needs a face to sit on.

The cardboard box row surprises people. A box is accepted as checked-in baggage if the box is robust and of good quality. It is a flat-sided object, so it satisfies the rule that a bulging holdall does not.

What happens if you fail either test

The procedure is to check in at the airline's baggage counter first, then drop the bag at the oversized baggage counter. Two stops rather than one, and Dubai Airports explicitly says to allow extra time.

This is the practical cost of getting the answer wrong. You queue at the counter, you are sent somewhere else with the bag, and you queue again — after which you still have to get to security. A bag you thought was normal turns a comfortable arrival at the airport into a tight one.

Before you get to the counter

1. Measure the longest side, not the total. Three separate limits mean the bag fails on whichever one it breaks. A long thin item passes two tests and still goes to the oversized counter.
2. Look at the shape before you pack. A soft bag passes the shape test empty and can fail it full. If it will not sit flat on a table, it will not sit flat on a belt.
3. Weigh before wrapping, not after. Wrapping is offered in the check-in areas, and Dubai Airports advises weighing first — wrapping a bag that then has to be opened and repacked wastes the fee and the wrap.
4. Strip the old tags. Dubai Airports asks you to remove old baggage tags before check-in because stale tags confuse the scanners and get bags mishandled. This costs nothing and takes ten seconds.

Where the airline’s rules sit alongside these

The two tests above are the airport’s. Your allowance — how many bags, how heavy, what the excess costs — belongs to the airline and is not published here. Both apply at once, which is why a bag can be inside the airline’s weight limit and still be handled as oversized.

What this page does not tell you

It gives no oversized handling fee, because Dubai Airports does not publish one — the charge, if there is one, comes from the airline.

It also gives no separate rule for sports equipment or musical instruments. The airport applies the same two tests to everything, and anything beyond that is the carrier’s policy.
