Can you leave your luggage at DXB, and what does it cost?

Every terminal at Dubai International has a staffed left-luggage counter on the Arrivals level, and they run 24/7. The part worth knowing before you plan around it is how the charging works, because it is not what most people assume.

What it costs

Prices are per bag. Terminal 3 is the cheapest of the three by AED 5 on a standard bag — worth knowing only if you are already flying through Terminal 3, since walking between terminals to save that is not a trade anyone should make.

The billing block is the thing to notice

You are charged for a block of 12 hours, not for the hours you actually use. 12 hours is the unit.

That changes the arithmetic of a short layover. If you have a four-hour window and you are deciding whether to store a bag and go into the city, the storage cost is the same as it would be for a full day. Two bags for one afternoon at Terminal 1 is AED 80, and that is before you have paid for any transport.

What counts as a standard bag

The standard rate covers bags up to 21 x 24 x 11 inches. Anything above that is still accepted, at the higher rate in the table above. The same higher rate applies to items the counter classifies as valuable.

If you are travelling with something that is neither obviously a suitcase nor obviously small — a bicycle box, a musical instrument, a pram — expect it to be priced as non-standard, and expect the counter staff rather than a published table to make that call. Where the counters are

The Terminal 3 counter being run by Emirates does not make it an Emirates-passengers-only service. It is the left-luggage desk for that terminal.

When this is worth doing

Storage is a means to an end: it exists so you can leave the airport without your bags. Whether leaving the airport makes sense at all depends on your immigration status and how much time you have after clearing passport control — that is a separate question, and it is the one to settle first. If the answer there is no, the storage price is irrelevant.

If the answer is yes, the sequence is: clear immigration, collect your bags, store them at the Arrivals counter, then go. Coming back, allow for the counter queue on top of your check-in time.
