What does Dubai immigration actually ask you when you land?

People prepare for a conversation that usually does not happen. If your passport is one of the visa-on-arrival ones and it is biometric, you are eligible for the Smart Gates, and the whole interaction is: look at the green light, without needing to scan a document.

Who goes through the gates

If you are in the second row, you are not being singled out — those are the categories the gates are not set up to handle, and the counter is the normal route for them.

There is nothing to sign up for beforehand

First-time Smart Gates users are registered at the passport control touchpoint on arrival. The first time you use one, the registration happens there and then. This trips people up because the phrase “Smart Gate registration” sounds like something you were supposed to arrange in advance.

Before you step up, Dubai Airports asks you to remove anything covering the face, such as masks, glasses and hats. Separately, some visitors may also have to complete an eye scan at passport control — Dubai Airports states this without naming which nationalities it applies to, so treat it as possible rather than certain.

The requirement that actually decides it

Everything above is about the machinery at the border. The rule that determines whether you get to use it is checked much earlier, usually by the airline at your departure gate:

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you enter the UAE.

That is a UAE government requirement, not an airline preference. A passport with five months left is a problem you have at home or at check-in, not at Dubai passport control — by the time you are standing at the gate, the question has already been answered.

If something does go wrong at the counter

The failure mode people imagine is being turned around at the gate. The more common one is duller: a question about your visa category, an entry permit that does not match the passport you handed over, or a fine sitting on a file from a previous trip.

Those are not decided by the officer at the desk. They belong to the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA), which is Dubai’s own authority for entry permits, tourist visas and visa status — including extensions and fines enquiries.

You do not have to leave the airport to reach them: the GDRFA visa office in Terminal 3 arrivals, near Entrance 1, open 24 hours. That desk can answer for a specific passport in a way that no general page can, and it is the right place to ask rather than arguing at passport control.

What this page does not tell you

Whether you specifically may enter the UAE depends on your nationality, your passport, your travel history and the visa category you fall into, and that is not a question a web page should answer. The visa-on-arrival list changes, and the UAE government says so itself. The same question decides whether you can leave the airport during a layover.
