Is it worth buying a SIM card at Dubai airport?

The word buying assumes there is a shelf to compare. At DXB there is not much of one. Dubai Airports lists exactly two telecom tenants across the whole airport — e& (formerly Etisalat) and du — and the first thing its own page says about du is that the company hands out free tourist SIMs at DXB's immigration counters.

That changes the question. It is not should I buy here or in the city. It is what am I handing over, and where do I have to be standing.

What Dubai Airports actually lists

Two things fall out of that table. The counter locations are identical, so there is no terminal where one operator is available and the other is not. And every location listed for either of them is arrivals-side — which matters more than it sounds, and is dealt with further down.

The free SIM, and the part nobody publishes

One sentence on the airport’s own page is the entire primary record of the free tourist SIM. How much data it carries, how long it stays alive, and who qualifies are not stated there. They are not on du’s shop either — that site renders nothing readable to anything except a live browser, which is why this ledger holds no du prices at all.

So the honest instruction is narrow: if a free SIM is offered to you at the immigration counter, take it. Do not build the first day of your trip on the assumption that it will cover you, because nobody has published what it covers.

What the counter costs you in things that are not money

The e& visitor line has a stated requirement: a valid passport and visa, in person at an e& outlet or partner. There is no self-service online route to one. The packs run 24 hours, 48 hours, 7, 14 and 28 days, valid for 28 days and repeatable.

Read that as a queue, not a price. Your passport is already open at immigration, so the document side costs nothing extra — but you are stopping, in the one part of the trip where everyone else on your flight is also stopping, to do something that does not need a counter at all.

When the airport counter is not available to you at all

Every telecom location the airport lists sits in arrivals. If you are connecting through Dubai on a single booking you stay airside and never enter arrivals, so none of those counters exist for you — see how the terminals connect for which connections put you through passport control and which do not.

This is the case where the counter question answers itself. A transit passenger who wants data has either arranged it before flying or is using airport Wi-Fi. No terms for the free SIM. Only that the airport says it exists — checked on the date shown above, and re-checked every 30 days because promotions end quietly.
