Should you get an eSIM, a local SIM, or use roaming in Dubai?

Most pages that compare these three treat it as a coverage question. It isn’t. Airalo’s UAE packages list Etisalat (e&) as the network they run on — which is the same network you get if you queue at a carrier counter in the arrivals hall. You are choosing a purchase method, not a signal.

That reframes the decision. Coverage is identical, so what actually differs is: how long it takes to get connected, whether you need a UAE phone number, and what you pay.

What the eSIM costs

Every UAE package Airalo lists is unlimited data. There are no fixed-GB tiers to work out, only lengths.

The per-day rate falls steadily with length. That is the obvious reading, and it is not the useful one.

Where the price ladder actually punishes you

You cannot buy 4 days. You buy 5 and use 4. What you pay per day of your actual trip depends on how badly its length misses a package boundary — and the penalty is larger than the headline rates suggest.

The worst value on the whole ladder is a 4-day trip at USD 4.75 per day — worse than a 3-day trip, worse than a 16-day one. If your dates are flexible by a day, landing on 5, 7, 10, 15 or 30 is worth more than any discount code.

A one or two night layover is the other bad case: the shortest package is three days, so a single night costs the full 3-day price. For a stopover that short, the airport’s free Wi-Fi and whatever your home plan already includes will usually do.

When the carrier counter still wins

You need a UAE phone number. Delivery apps, taxi bookings, some hotel check-ins and most local OTP messages want a local mobile number. Data-only eSIM packages do not give you one. This is the most common reason to walk to the counter.

Your phone does not support eSIM. Support varies by model and by the region a handset was sold in, and we do not maintain a device list — check your own phone’s settings before you fly rather than in the arrivals hall.

You are staying longer than a month. Airalo’s UAE ladder stops at USD 72.00 for 30 days. e& sells packs in 24 hours, 48 hours, 7, 14 and 28 days, valid for 28 days and repeatable, which suits a longer stay better.

To buy one you need a valid passport and visa, in person at an e& outlet or partner. There is no self-service online route for a visitor line, which is precisely the cost the eSIM removes.

When roaming wins

Only if your existing plan already includes the UAE. Some plans do; the terms are your carrier’s, not something we can verify here, so check your own contract before you leave. If it is included and the allowance is real, ignore the rest of this page.

If it is not included, the comparison is against roughly USD 3.93 per day for unlimited data above, and pay-as-you-go roaming rarely wins that. The failure mode is also asymmetric: you find out what roaming cost after you get home.

What this page does not tell you

We do not quote carrier counter prices. e& does not publish visitor-line pack prices on any public page, and du’s shop does not render its prices to anything but a live browser. We could copy figures from other travel sites, but we would have no way to know when they were last true — which is the entire thing this site exists to avoid. If you want the counter price, ask at the counter.
