Where can you sleep or shower at Dubai airport?

Dubai Airports lists two places to sleep: the DXB Hotel and Sleepover. Both are airside, behind passport control, and both cost money. The airport’s list has no free sleeping area. Which of the two you can reach depends on the concourse your connection leaves you at, so start with the letter on your boarding pass.

Where each option is, by terminal

The gate letters matter more than the terminal numbers, because that is what your boarding pass shows: Terminal 1 = D Gates, Terminal 2 = F Gates, Terminal 3 = A/B/C Gates. Sleepover pods and cabins

Sleepover, which traded as sleep 'n fly until its rebrand, runs four sleep stations at DXB: opposite Gate A1, between Gates B14 and B18 and next to Gate C14 in Terminal 3, and opposite Gates D6 and D7 in Terminal 1. They offer sleeping pods and single, double and bunk cabins, from a short nap to a full night, and they are open 24 hours, every day.

Two details change plans. A lounge membership gets you in only without a booking, so you take whatever is free when you arrive. And only two of the four locations have showers; at A or C Gates, a shower means walking to B Gates or using the hotel or a lounge.

The hotel, booked by the hour

The DXB Hotel is in Terminal 3, on the level above Duty Free, inside the Departures Area, and its operator describes it as designed exclusively for transit passengers. The booking model — book by the hour — suits a layover better than a nightly rate, and a room includes Wi-Fi, shower essentials, towels and a bathrobe, tea and coffee, a safe, and a 24-hour reception.

What catches people out is the coverage: rooms in Terminal 3 only. A connection that leaves you at D Gates can still mean a bed, but it is a Sleepover cabin at D Gates, not a hotel room.

Is there anywhere free to sleep?

Not on the airport’s own list. The two places Dubai Airports files under sleep options are the hotel and Sleepover, both paid, and none of the lounges, spas or family areas it lists is a sleeping area. The closest thing to free is a lounge membership: Sleepover admits members of Priority Pass, LoungeKey and DragonPass as walk-in guests. What your membership covers there is between you and the membership provider.

If you only want a shower

Showers are listed in three kinds of place: the hotel rooms in Terminal 3, Sleepover at Terminal 3 B Gates and Terminal 1 D Gates, and the Plaza Premium Lounge at Terminal 3’s A Gates, which lists showers, a Family Suite and a children's play area and takes economy passengers. None of the sources publishes a price for a shower on its own.

Airside or landside — decide this first

Everything above is airside, and both sleep options are for passengers in transit. The moment you consider a hotel outside the airport, two things change:

• You must be admissible to the UAE. That is a question for the authorities and your airline, not for us — see can I leave the airport on a layover for the requirements and the official links.
• You clear immigration twice and re-check in, which eats a meaningful part of a short layover.

So, in practice

• Long layover, A, B or C Gates? The hotel or Sleepover, both airside. Want a shower at Sleepover? Book B Gates.
• Long layover, D Gates? Sleepover is the only place to sleep there, and it has a shower.
• Terminal 2? Neither sleep option is there. Plan on nowhere to lie down.
• Holding a lounge membership? Walk in to Sleepover rather than booking, and accept that a space is not guaranteed.
• Overnight and admissible to the UAE? Compare an airport-area hotel; it may win on cost per hour slept.
