Can you get your nol card balance back when you leave Dubai?

Answer

Yes, if it is a Silver or Gold card that is still active and holds only a small balance. Hand it in at the ticket office of any Metro station and RTA pays the balance back in cash on the spot, minus a fixed fee. Above RTA's cash limit, the station cannot refund it at all.

Yes. Take a Silver or Gold card at the ticket office of any Metro station, hand it to the station agent, and RTA pays the remaining balance in cash, on the spot. Two conditions apply: the card must be still active: not blocked, expired, damaged or faulty, and the balance on it must be no more than AED 100. RTA keeps 2.5% of the balance or AED 5, whichever is higher.

That route is for cards that were never registered. You give up the card itself: what RTA describes paying out is the remaining balance.

The fee is always the flat one

The percentage never comes into play at a station. The largest balance a station will refund is AED 100, and 2.5% of that is AED 2.50, which is less than the flat AED 5. So every station refund costs AED 5, and what you get back is the balance minus that.

The station limitAED 5AED 95

A balance of AED 5 or less leaves nothing once the fee is taken, so a card that is nearly empty is not worth the queue. One more Metro journey uses it better: a one-zone trip on Silver costs AED 3.

Above the limit, the station cannot help

A Silver or Gold card can hold up to AED 1,000, far more than a station will refund. RTAโ€™s online refunds are for registered cards only. Its FAQ says an anonymous card cannot be refunded through the RTA website at all.

So the practical rule is to top up in small amounts, and less towards the end of the trip. A card left holding more than AED 100 has no refund route on the page RTA publishes for unregistered cards.

The Red Ticket has its own rule

The paper Red Ticket can also be refunded in cash at a Metro station, but only within 30 days of buying it, and only if no day of a Travel Pass on it has been used. The fee is AED 2, the same as the AED 2 the ticket costs. RTA does not say how much of a Red Ticketโ€™s value it returns, so this page does not put a figure on it.

Charged too much on a journey: a separate claim

Getting a balance back and getting a wrong fare back are two different services. RTA treats no tap-out, a double tap, a cancelled journey or a higher fare charged as an overcharge, and refunds up to AED 4.50 per claim on a Silver card and AED 9 on a Gold card.

Those ceilings line up with the fare table. The dearest Silver fare, AED 7.5, minus the cheapest, AED 3, is AED 4.50, and on Gold (AED 15 minus AED 6) it is AED 9. A journey charged at the top fare when it should have cost the least is therefore covered in full. RTA does not give that as its reason; it is simply what the figures show.

The overcharge page does not say whether an unregistered card can be claimed online. The balance refund page says online channels need a registered card. Claim before you fly if you are going to, because the window is short.

Doing it on the way out

If you take the Metro to the airport, the refund fits into the last journey. DXB has Metro stations at Terminals 1 and 3, and the refund is offered at any Metro station, so you can ride, tap out, and hand the card in at that stationโ€™s ticket office. Getting between the airport and the city covers the Metro times and the other options.

Tap out on that last ride. A journey with no tap-out is one of the overcharge cases above, and leaving the fare area without paying is on RTAโ€™s list of Metro fines. What gets you fined on the Metro lists the rules.

If you have not bought a card yet, which nol card to buy sets out when the paper Red Ticket is the cheaper choice and when Silver is.

Where this page stops

It covers cards you did not register. A registered card or a Personal (Blue) card is refunded through RTAโ€™s website or app with a UAE Pass login.

It does not say whether the part of the cardโ€™s price that was not balance comes back. RTA describes the payout as the remaining balance and says nothing more.

Where these figures come from

The station refund, its limit, its fee and the Red Ticket rule are on RTAโ€™s โ€œRefund nol Cards Balanceโ€ service page, anonymous card tab. The overcharge limits and time limit are on the overcharge tab of the same service. Card balances are from RTAโ€™s nol page, fares from RTAโ€™s nol fares page, and the airport Metro stations from Dubai Airports. We read each page directly.
